Title: Integrating Perception and Manipulation for Automatic Object Modeling
Time: 11:00 AM, Jun. 9, 2017
Place: Room 506, High-tech Park Building D, BIT
Abstract:
Many robotic manipulation tasks require the knowledge of 3D object models of the target objects. How to build a 3D object model based on geometric and visual appearance of an object is thus an important problem. In this talk, I will introduce my group¡¯s work on building 3D object models from RGB-D images automatically through interleaving model building with robotic manipulation. I will first talk about automatic object modeling with a conventional robotic manipulator and then present our work on automatic object modeling in an unknown, cluttered environment using a continuum manipulator. Next, I will further introduce our work on autonomous manipulation with a continuum manipulator in cluttered environments and under task constraints.
Introduction of Speaker:
Jing Xiao received her Ph.D. degree in Computer, Information, and Control Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. She is a Professor of Computer Science, College of Computing and Informatics (CCI), University of North Carolina at Charlotte, USA, where she also served as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs of CCI for five years (1/2008-12/2012). Professor Xiao is the Site Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on Robots and Sensors for the Human Well-being. She served as the Program Director of the NSF Robotics and Human Augmentation Program for more than two years (8/1998-12/2000). Professor Xiao is an IEEE Fellow. Her research spans robotics, haptics, and intelligent systems. She has co-authored a monograph and published extensively in major robotics journals, conferences, and books. She received the 2015 CCI Outstanding Faculty Research Award, and one of her recent PhD graduates received the 2016 Graduate Dean¡¯s Distinguished Dissertation Award. Jing Xiao has been elected twice as an Administrative Committee Member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) and is currently serving as the Vice President for Member Activities of RAS in her 2nd two-year term. She received the 2016 IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Distinguished Service Award.
